In the city, everyone uses Augmented Reality for orientation, it is hard to get around otherwise. Some districts even require it.
Aside from the common information overlays, warnings and symbols, any item, be it a piece of clothing, a bag, a cup can be subtly enhanced as long as you don't rapidly move it or put it in other adverse conditions.
Unenhanced items are referred to as generics.
Then there are, of course, all kinds of custom, random or simple enhancements.
What most people use though is a service offered through their Misple accounts: Almost all brands offer AR support for both generics - often including firmware updates and such - as well as their own special product lines with lots of customization options. Misple can be preset to certain brands' AR but is also able to automatically choose from local brands depending on previous choices, marketing strategies and what you can afford. The same brand might go with different slogans, themes, design elements to cater to differing tastes, aesthetics and moods in various areas or venues. The basic package for most brands is free as is Misple itself.
Moving to the bar in the back, the one adorned with some sort of white plush, you reduce the dosage somewhat to fade out the music. Misple has gotten you a drink, something by Twój, expensive, judging from the animated butterfly sitting on the side of the glass gently moving its wings. Those always look like they're breathing. You saw real ones at the Sociyo Insectarium when you went there with your parents a couple of years back. You absently browse through the Twój designs that came with the drink. Maybe change the vest? But it's too close to basic package stuff, so you're not risking that tonight.
Want to see what brands are most popular or competing in a given area?
How it works:
1. Throw a couple of d6 on a blank piece of paper or on your city map. The number shown on each die is the number of important brands in the respective area. (For a venue, just roll a single d6 or multiple for different floors/bars/...).
2. Find out what brands they are by rolling on the d10 brands table. If a brand comes up twice or more in the same area, they have a flagship presence there.
d10 brands
1 Oblivenchy
2 Rostock
3 CZ
4 Pulse
5 Twój
6 Cbyl
7 Sociyo
8 Alpha
9 Zero Lucy!
10 Meridian
3. Think of a slogan, themes and design elements for each assigned brand in that area. Remember: The same brand will probably be marketed differently in different areas. Even the physical design, flavouring et cetera might differ.
Additional Rules:
If a character shuts off AR entirely, they are impaired.
If a character wears generics, they're suspicious.
If the enhancements to their items are custom, random or simple, they must be weird or poor.
If the enhancements to their items are of a brand on the local list, they'll be complimented on it (not for the basic package, though).
Brand loyalty:
If a character has at any point during the game used a brand enhancement for any of their items and if, depending on where the scene is set, that brand is on the local list, the augmented reality around them will noticeably conform to the slogan, themes or design of the brand in that particular area for the duration of the scene. If that is the case for more than one brand, determine randomly which one takes precedence.
Also, if a character at any point during a scene does, says or feels something in accordance with the local slogan, theme or design of a brand whose enhancements they have used before, that action, statement or feeling replaces a local slogan, theme or design of that brand.
!: In case of a major disaster, the various government ministries will take over and use this system.
